FREETOWN VILLAGE is a symbolic community representing many of the predominantly black settlements in Indiana in the post Civil War years. This post Civil war period was a time of triumph and victory for African Americans. All of the Freetown Village "residents" are composites of the nearly 3,000 black men, women, and children who lived in Indianapolis in the year I870. Freetown Village is the only cultural institution of its kind: a Iiving history museum dedicated to celebrating African American life and culture.
FREETOWN VILLAGE is a historic resource center, encouraging the study and research of past events and people, and a provider of historical entertainment. Our educational programs include storytellers, cultural craft, heritage workshops, a seven-week summer camp, our Evening Dinner Program, and many special events. Our programs reach school children and families alike, bringing our history to life.
